Rachael Mannell, CLEO’s Beauty Editor, shows you how work this season’s more adventurous trends including a glitzy smoky eye for a gorgeous evening beauty look.
Skin Prep
Step 1. Prep the face to remove any existing makeup and create a clean base using a cleanser, toner and moisturiser.
Step 2. Ensure an even tone by using primer and foundation. Keep the face really natural as the real focus for this look is the smoky eye.
Expert Tip: Use a foundation brush to apply onto face for an even finish. You can touch up the nose and eye area with your fingers to blend gently.
Smoky Bronze Eye
Step 3. Start with a dark bronze or a shimmery chocolate eye colour and work from lash to crease with a compact eyeshadow brush. To apply, turn the brush upside down so you can use the brush to work the shadow as close to the lash line as possible. Press the product gently onto the eyelid, working up to the crease, just below the brow bone and no further than the outer corner of the eye.
Expert Tip: Do not apply eyeshadow under the bottom lashes as this look is all about the top of the eye.
Step 4.Change to a larger brush and softly blend the line of eye colour out on the crease of the eyelid so it creates a smoky effect. Be sure to only blend the colour slightly onto the orbital bone and not all the way to the brow.
Step 5. Line the bottom inner eye with a black liner.
Step 6. Apply two coats of black mascara using zig zag patterns through the lashes.
Step 7. 7. Finish with a dab of gold on the inner corner of each eye to highlight to make your eyes pop!
Finishing Touches
Step 8. Keep lips very soft and natural by applying either a nude or clear gloss.
Expert Tip: If you don’t want an overly glossy lip, use a little foundation to block out the natural colour of your lips and finish with a dab of clear gloss in the middle to give the illusion of a fuller pout.
Step 9. To keep in with the sun-kissed theme, use an angled makeup brush to apply a bronzer to contour the cheekbone. Start from the top of the ear and, going in the direction of the corner of the mouth, gently apply the bronzer in soft sweeping motions. This technique is also useful for creating the illusion of a narrower face. You can also apply to the chin, sides of forehead and just under the nose for an all over bronzed look.
Expert Tip: Bronzers should not be used to create an all-over tan on your face. Instead, use bronzer to contour and highlight your best features and to give the illusion of a subtly sun-kissed complexion.
Step 10. 10. Keep hair natural, beachy and boho. You can use a side plait on each side of the hair to gently hold back a fringe and to create a gorgeous sweeping effect to frame the face. Finish off with hairspray to hold.
