Dita Von Teese: 30 Tips for 30 Days

30 Days Team
Tuesday, July 12, 2011

The 30 Days team caught up with one of the sexiest women on the planet, Dita Von Teese, for a tete-a-tete on style, beauty and glamour!

Ultimate fashion item every girl needs in her wardrobe?
The perfectly fit black dress that is both sexy yet elegant, with just the right amount of skin showing. Something that you could seduce in that would also be suitable for a sophisticated affair. Find the right balance. For example, show off your cleavage, but keep the hemline just below the knee. A hemline below the knee is sexy yet elegant.

How to go from drab to fab in minutes?
For me, a quick hot roller hair set changes my life, and I can do it in less than 10 minutes. Similarly, a good mineral powder (I like MAC Mineralize Powder) swept over the face with a bit of blush and lip colour. I like a bright red, bright fuschia or a coral in the summertime.

Top tips for feeling sexy?
Find what makes you feel sexy and feel good about yourself rather than trying to appeal to what others might say is sexy. It starts with you.

How can we achieve your flawless complexion?
I believe in seeing a dermatologist for all skin care concerns because everyone has different issues and miracles don't come in fancy department store jars. See an expert that isn't recommending things based on gaining commissions.

Make-up themes for your Be Cointreauversial show?
Bright red lips, very strong brows, and Swarovski-embellished lashes.

Someone who you get beauty inspiration from?
Irving Penn's photographs of his wife Lisa Fonssagrives.

Someone's style you admire?
Madonna. Throughout her career, her reinventions are styled to perfection. She leaves no stone unturned and she never looks "professionally styled" like many celebs that look like they paid dearly for their pulled-together look. Madonna is one who knows, and throughout her career, in her reinventions, she gets every detail of her look right.

Where do you get inspiration for your outfits?
My favourite old movies, books, vintage photographs, and from my favourite modern designers too.

Fashion designers that you admire?
John Galliano, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Elie Saab and Moschino.

How to keep in shape?
I do Pilates, ballet classes and yoga.

Invest in shoes or bags?
Shoes first. They are carrying every ounce of you! Good quality shoes are important.

Leather, lace or denim? And why?
It depends on the context. But clearly for me, denim is out.

Hair style and tips to achieve for your Be Cointreauversial show?
A hot roller set with big s-shaped waves.

Signature scent?
Caron's Narcisse Noir and Dior Pasage #8 and #4.

On keeping beautifully groomed brows?
I dye them and tweeze gently ... never over tweeze.

Favourite city to shop in?
I love shopping for vintage in Los Angeles at the Santa Monica Vintage Expo.

Your favourite online store?
www.ebay.com

How to look seductive in a photograph?
Practice and study what looks best for your face. Find out which is your good side.

Lingerie must-haves?
The perfect black bra, with one panty+one string, and a garter belt. Always buy two panties for each bra, because you wash the panties more so they wear out more quickly and it's also good to have two options as far as the style. Plus if you lose or ruin a pair, you don't lose the entire set!

Tips to attract a man's attention?
Make eye contact.

How to look stylish on a budget?
Study similarities between your favourite designers and less expensive brands or vintage. If you notice the similarities, you can get that look for less!

Most extravagant fashion buy?
Besides my burlesque costumes, it would be coats. I love a great coat, and if you choose wisely, it is chic year after year.

Your daily skincare routine?
I use a light retinol from my dermatologist called Refissa at night, and I use Creme de La Mer in the day, with a sunscreen over the top. I never, ever go to bed with my make-up on!

Your top beauty treatment?
I love to go to traditional Korean spas for a full-body scrub. It's not expensive and it's amazing.

Favourite fashion moment?
When I'm asked if my dress is Dior or Prada when it's actually a flea market find.

Fashion and beauty trend that confuses/shocks you?
Crocs shoes and Ugg boots. When I was in high school, Uggs were for surfers to wear to go to the beach at 5am. I associate them with my high school sweetheart, who was a surfer and a lifeguard. They're so masculine to me. I can't stand how they look on girls with dresses. It's a very popular look in Los Angeles, and hideous if you ask me.

How do you unwind?
I like to cook and entertain at home, and I like to shop flea markets on the weekends.

On keeping grounded in world of celebrity?
I guess it's just easy for some people and not for others. I live by the rule that everyone is replaceable, so don't act like a jerk. If you believe your own hype and your own publicity, you're probably a jerk. I look at every good thing anyone ever says about me as a reminder to try to live up to the words.

The one piece of advice you've been given and couldn't have done without?
Carmen Dell'Orefice told me once to continue and to never to stray from my path and she told me that I had a good message to convey and not to underestimate it.

Excellent interview, it's nice to see someone with more of a classic style. Tired of boring hollywood celebrities, this lady has class.
